Can you spell…CONSOLIDATION?

Hello all, just got word that Amazon will purchase Audible.com for $300M. According to Amazon’s site, “Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN), today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Audible Inc. (NASDAQ:ADBL)…The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals, and is expected to close by the second quarter of 2008.”:: This, along with Gibson Guitar’s acquisition of the TC Group, sustains the trend of consolidation in both the manufacturer and consumption of audio products and content. As with most things, despite what my mom thinks (sorry mom), both good and bad results can be expected from these developments.:: Speaking of consolidation, it may be all over save for the shouting…As of May of this year, it looks like three quarters of the Hollywood high res disc releases will be exclusively Blu-ray. The player prices also are coming down to something within reach of most enthusiasts. Hey OPPO, where’s my combi player?! This means an end to the confusion in the marketplace, with the “better” format winning the war.:: Since HD DVD was clearly, to be polite, a transitional format, content providers have stepped up to a better quality delivery medium that will carry the industry along for another eight years. By then, I think one of the next generation, higher density carriers will win majority mind share and start the next round of format upgrades.:: Whether it ends up being holographic, multilevel channels coding or some freaky combo of which we are not yet privy, it will provide a capacity and/or data rate step up by at least a factor of five. All for now…be good and eat your cruciferous veggies!
