If you want to stay ahead of both your competition and the technology on which you depend, try learning one thing new every day. I've done the hard work for you, locating the best publications in each field by reading the particular volume or by asking colleagues for their recommendations.

These books are the finest examples of acoustical, analog and digital audio, music production and engineering, mastering, recording studio practices, information theory and new media production texts that I know. Over time, I've continued to add to the list.

About these books...I am familiar with all titles below that carry my comments. Other books, such as the Watkinson titles without accompanying review, are here because of my respect for his other books with which I am familiar. Finally, a few volumes have a 3rd party review. I have winnowed many, many books in the hope of finding ones that fill a need. I'll keep reading and, hopefully, you will as well...

Ken Pohlmann
Principles of Digital Audio

An excellent intermediate survey of the digital audio landscape. This text covers conversion, signal processing, channel coding and storage as well as current implementations of the technology. Good illustrations are included for visual reinforcement.
Pohlmann's breezy writing style guides the reader from basic physics through dense theoretical discussion to practical examples. A freshman college background in physics and mathematics is useful though not essential. - OMas

John Watkinson
An Introduction to Digital Audio

Concerned more with implementation than theory, this book handles it's topic with Watkinson’s typical depth and clarity. - OMas

The Art of Digital Audio

A more technical approach than Pohlmann's Principles of Digital Audio above, this text digs deeply into the science and mathematics of digital audio. Very thorough, requiring a junior level college background for best appreciation. - OMas

A Technical Introduction to Digital Video

This book live up to it's title, covering all of the basic concepts a compressionist needs to prepare for DTV (by Whitaker, listed below). Included is everything from rasterizing, linearity and noise issues to color science, coding methods, scanning and sync. Chapters on testing and time code round out the treatment.

A glossary is included. A great book for building an understanding of underlying principles, I've followed Mr. Poynton's writing for better than a decade and I've learned a lot! - OMas

Not a programming or a recipe book, this is a complete reference that presents the fundamental concepts and processes (sic) development of digital video projects. This book is designed for technical people not already video experts who need to design, build and program--hardware and software--systems that include video. - The Publisher

Concert and Opera Halls : How They Sound

You may argue with BB&N's work, but this book is a classic - OMas

"For years architects had felt acousticians were cramping their
style; if they neglected acoustical advice, they courted catastrophe. Paradoxically, acoustical consultants have now liberated architects to do more of what they want. This story is one of many that can be traced and studied in Beranek's book, which contains complete and complex acoustical data for 67 halls, along with striking photographs and helpful architectural drawings...Beranek's book will obviously be useful and inspirational reference for anyone in the future who wants to build a new concert hall or opera house. But Beranek addresses much of his book not just to professionals but also to people who love music--and who travel around the world to hear it." - AIP Press; Featured Profile of Leo Beranek in The Boston Globe , 07/02/96

Who Is Fourier? : A Mathematical Adventure

Taking an unconventional approach to the pioneering Monsieur Fourier’s contribution to our understanding of the world, the Mathematical Adventure helps you to understand the principles of Fourier Analysis. Digital audio processing depends on FFTs and this book gives marvelous insight into the process. A freshman-level college math background desirable but not necessary. A very groovy way to learning “higher” math. - OMas
