Hidden Commands For Mac OS

Take Control Of Your Antique Mac!

Here are many of the commands in Mac OS 9.x that
aren't accessable from any menu...

Commands At Boot-time

     

    Note that the following key combinations need to be held down until the "Welcome To Macintosh" message appears...

    Modifier Key(s) Result
    command + option + shift + delete Bypass Startup Disk & boot from external device
    command + option + p + r Erase Parameter RAM
    spacebar Drop into Extensions Manager
    shift Disable Entensions
    c Boot from CD-ROM drive

Other Boot-time Commands

     

    Note that the following key combination needs to be held down after Extensions load but before any drives are mounted...

From The Finder

    Force the forground application to quit
    command + option + tab
    Erase floppy that you insert
    command + option + power key
    Restart the computer
    command + shift + 1
    Eject primary internal floppy
    command + shift + 2
    Eject secondary internal or external floppy
    command + shift + 3
    Save whole display to disk ("screen shot" or screen capture, see next entry below; also works in SimpleText)
    command + shift + 4
    Save user defined part of display to disk (marquee'd screen capture; also works in SimpleText)
    command + . (period key)
    Cancel forground process (not universally applicable)
    option
    Acts as a modifier to apply action to all {example: hold down the option key while activating window shade in any window will cause open windows to behave together
    option
    Acts as a modifier to change the Apple Menu "About this Macintosh" to "About the Finder"
    option
    Acts as a modifier to close all open windows on startup
    option
    Acts as a modifier, when dragging Finder items, to duplicate those items
    option
    Acts as a modifier to hide the forground application when switching to another application
    command + optionActs as a modifier when opening the Memory control panel. Allows control of Startup Memory Tests ( 8.6 & newer only )

In The Finder's Browser Dialog

    Go to the Desktop
    command + . (period key)
    Cancel/close Browser dialog
    command + up-arrow
    Move up one level (toward the root) in the file system
    up/down arrow
    Top down/bottom up successive selection in the list
    left/right arrow
    Select the first item in the list
    ~ (tilde key)
    Select the last item in the list
    tabToggle between Name field and Path list
    type a name
    (when in the) Name field, typing a file's name will select that file
